Valentine's Day at the Office

I suppose that since I work downtown, many of

SF’s finest romantics had to give the florists a break

and send their sweeties flowers a day early.  Indeed,

some of the ladies here are already receiving their

VD bouquets today.  It’s funny.  It’s supposed to be a marker

of a good boyfriend or husband.  Well, in a superficial way.

To all your friends, a cheating or mean boyfriend could

seem really awesome if all they see are the flowers.

It’s just such a scene with all the “oh”s, “ahh”s, and “how

sweet”s I’m hearing and I’m sure will hear all day tomorrow too.

It’s nice though…it makes the office look pretty, and it

smell like flowers instead of microwave popcorn and

printer toner.

In a very Sex in the City kind of way, I’m wondering

why Valentine’s Day is such a big deal. I’m sure there

will be hurt feelings by some women because their

man didn’t get them anything..especially if they sit

beside another woman who got a big bouquet of

roses or something.  It’s pretty dumb really, but

I guess I can understand.  While VD displays are

arbitrary in nature, it does feel good when someone

you like or love goes out of his/her way to let you

know they feel the same way, or to just make you

feel special.

Maybe this year, make VD less meaningless and commercial

by telling your sweety what they could do to make you feel

special and loved, and ask them what you could do for them.

And forgive him for not getting you any damn flowers!

Blame the Champagne...

I feel like crap today.  I also felt even MORE like

crap yesterday.  I had my housewarming party on

Saturday night, which was a total blast.

Most of my favorite people showed up, and

everyone seemed to have a really good time.

My favorite man came too, and everyone got

to meet him.  Happily, everyone

could see why I like him so much.  He’s funny,

smart, charming, and awesome conversation too.

Unfortunately, I drank too much, so I was really sick

Sunday morning, which last the rest of the day, and

has me feeling bad today too. Though I know I wasn’t

the only one to fee like crap, I know for myself,

I’ve become too old to drink so much.

I know exactly what went wrong.

I started with wine, then switched to beer, then drank

a glass of champagne that Melody brought to celebrate

the fact that despite all the turmoil of our lives of late,

we’re still making it.  (And I did feel quite happy to look

around my new studio that was filled with all my dear

friends and realize that I really will be okay.)

Now that I’ve spoken to several other partiers, it seems

that everyone who drank some champagne was sick

yesterday too.  Maybe that’s because we all mixed our

drinks, and had way too many of them.

It just happened though!  I think everyone was

just talking and drinking, and next thing you know,

we’ve drank 6 bottle of wine, and case of beer, and

3 bottles of champagne.  Oops!

In addition, drinking (excessive drinking that is)

brings out the worst in me.  I started

feeling really insecure at one point, and I’m too

old for that too.  And when I’m feeling insecure, I’m not at

my best…I can be mean, bitchy, and passive-aggressive,

which is just embarrassing.  When I’m drinking, it can

put me in another state of consciousness that’s

really dark, and really distrustful.  And God, I hate feeling

that way, I really do.  And I hate being embarrassed by

my the resulting behaviors.

So, I’m making an effort to keep my drinking under control.

The thing is, I really haven’t been drinking that much for awhile.

I go out for drinks, but I usually only have one, maybe 2.  And

that’s how it needs to be for me.  If I just remember how I felt

yesterday and today, it should be that hard!!
